One of the more frequent calls and emails that we get at LHM is about counselors. Just because a counselor IS a Christian and even counsels at a Christian Counseling Center, does not mean the counselor will be in agreement with the a Biblical view of sexuality. Such proclamations can be incredibly devastating to them and to their future.
Part of the Freedom from Homosexuality Series. Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
And while some issues have little to do with sexuality, gender, or identity, the LGBTQ community does have their own set of unique challenges as well. This may be due to the stigma and discrimination LGBTQ individuals often face on a regular basis, from society, family members, peers, co-workers, and even classmates. This discrimination contributes to the higher rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health struggles seen amongst LGBTQ. Thus, it is not surprising this population seeks mental health services at higher rates.
People who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender LGBT face particular obstacles, barriers, and challenges that frequently make it difficult for them to find and receive competent and affirming healthcare. Because of this, they may experience a higher degree of distress and symptoms than their non-LGBT counterparts. These issues also make it difficult for LGBT people to receive optimal mental healthcare.

Students enrolled in college programs today, with plans to work as counselors, must go through different forms of training designed to help them assist their future students.

If a therapist believes homosexuality is wrong, sinful, immoral, or a mental illness, he or she should NOT work with gay clients. Refer this client to someone who is able to provide the necessary components of a therapeutic relationship.

Some individuals argue the practice of grouping those who are not heterosexual or cisgender or neither under this acronym, which may or may not accurately represent their particular sexual orientation or identity, is itself an exclusionary act.
Part of the Leaving Homosexuality Series. Can homosexuals change? Is trying to change sexual orientation harmful?
Imagine a world filled with counselors who all shared the same beliefs, values and attitudes. For those counselors to effectively serve their clients, the clients should also share the same beliefs, values and attitudes as the counselors, right? Counselors are as diverse as the clients they serve, meaning the values of the counselor may not always align with the values of the client. Some may think that Christian counselors with conservative beliefs against same-sex orientation should not provide counseling to that population.
